It is 10 months since I started my role as producer at Standby Productions, and it’s strange to think that it’s been almost exactly a year since I handed in my last project for my Media Production degree. A lot has changed in the past 10 months. I feel like I’ve found my feet now at Standby with still tonnes to learn, as each day can bring a new challenge. I’ve already had the chance to experience really cool projects, we worked with a two time Oscar winner who was also responsible for building the sound desk’s used on Titanic and Avatar and whose clients have ranged from Michael Jackson to Daft Punk. We have also just won the contract to create a film for a big offshore project (which we’re not allowed to say too much about yet) so there are exciting times ahead. Today (5th May) is Standby’s fifth birthday in business, which was started by this School’s former student Simon Owen, and the whole crew were interviewed to find out what we were doing five years ago. Here was my recollection for our 05.05.2015 countdown to Standby’s fifth year:
It has been just over a year since my very first job interview for my role at Standby Productions. I remember being pretty nervous in the last few months of my time at Lincoln School of Film & Media about what the future would hold and where I would be working (which seemed to be a common theme across all of my peers). I feel very lucky to have been given the role of producer and getting the opportunity to use lots of the skills that I learnt and developed whilst studying at Lincoln and a year later, I haven’t looked back. I first saw the job posting on the LSFM Facebook group, so I would definitely recommend keeping a close eye on the posts on there!
The job sounded perfect for me, everything I imagined myself doing after university with the huge bonus of being able to learn new skills whilst doing the job. The interview process itself was quite intense and I was incredibly nervous, mainly down to the fact that I wanted the job so badly and I knew there was a lot of competition. Despite this I was lucky enough to be offered the job and I am really enjoying my working life in Manchester.
I owe a huge thank you to everyone at the University of Lincoln for shaping me into the person I am today and would not change a second of my three years there. I would also massively recommend gaining work experience outside of University, I think the experience I gained on professional sets went a long way in helping me in the interview and preparing me for my current role.
Standby itself is just about to start it’s fifth year and growing all the time. We have a brand new Website and showreel. You can also follow us on Twitter @STANDBYPROD and on Facebook.
