Congrats from LSM to MACE: It achieves national accreditation

Visit the Mace websiteStaff and student researchers from the University of Lincoln now benefit from access to the UK’s first accredited film archive, after the Media Archive for Central England (MACE) was recognised for its outstanding service.  The Archive Service Accreditation is the new quality standard created to celebrate good performance in service and delivery, and MACE has been named among the first six organisations in the country to receive the quality mark.  The screen archive for the East and West Midlands is housed in the University of Lincoln’s School of Media, and it is the only resource of its kind to receive the award from the UK Archive Service Accreditation Committee, which represents the archives sector nationally.

Midlands on Film DVD CollectionEarlier this year, MACE collaborated with experts from Lincoln School of Media to create a unique series of documentaries, entitled ‘Midlands on Film’. The DVDs celebrated the on-screen heritage of the region. Sarah Barrow, Head of the Lincoln School of Media, said: “We are so pleased to have MACE on our doorstep – the archive offers high quality tangible opportunities to our students, graduates and staff as a base for research and employment. Lincoln School of Media’s Student Engagement Champions

Each academic school (and professional support departments, like the Library) now has Student Engagement Champions.  At the LSM we’ve Senior Lecturer Graham Cooper.  Our Academic Subject Librarian Faye Cleminson is also a Student Engagement Champion, and she’s in the video below. Director of Education and Students for the College of Arts is LSM’s Principal Lecturer Nigel Morris.

The Student Engagement Hub said: Student Engagement Champions are tasked with leading their colleagues in embedding a culture of partnership and co-production. The aim’s to engage students meaningfully at all levels of the University.  With the new roll-out to schools, there are lots of colleagues new to the role – with this in mind Student Engagement at Lincoln developed ‘Basecamp’, a training session designed to get everybody off to a great start in the role.  This video shares more about the training, as well as some thoughts from a couple of Champions themselves.

Team Achievement Research Award for ‘Midlands on Film’ (LSM/MACE)

Congratulations to the LSM team for being highly commended in the category of ‘Achievement in Research’ for its ‘Midlands on Film’ series. It was a collaborative research project between the Lincoln School of Media (LSM) and the Media Archive for Central England (MACE).

Tributes: Visiting Professor Antonia Bird, TV & Film Director

Gone but not forgotten is Antonia Bird, our Visiting Professor for Film and TV, who has sadly died from cancer at the age of 54.  Tributes have been coming in for the multi-award winning writer, director and producer for stage and screen – television and film. Robert Carlyle actor in Antonia’s well known films Priest, Face and Ravenous, said: “RIP Antonia Bird. Farewell my beautiful friend.”

Head of Lincoln School of Media, Dr Sarah Barrow: “We were privileged and honoured to have known Antonia and been associated with her. She was an incredible advocate for the role of women in media. And a very talented person across all media. BAFTA award-winning ‘Priest’ was an amazing film and I’ll never forget the special [jam-packed] screening of it at Cambridge Arts Cinema in 1994, presented by Linus Roach. More recently, ‘The Village’ on BBC1 (with John Simm and Maxine Peake) was so powerful, brave and provocative. And her work with Jimmy McGovern on the inimitable ‘Cracker’ was ground-breaking.”

LSM’s Senior Lecturer Marcella Forster: “So sad that Antonia has died.  She was a great director and an inspiring woman.”

Radio Legend Trevor Dann is at LSM

Trevor DannVisiting Professor Trevor Dann is at the Lincoln School of Media today. He’ll be on campus over the next couple of days and said, modestly, there’ll be “lots of radio folks who know more than I do!” Trevor will be “leading talks, workshops, debates and offering tons of practical advice” said Head of LSM Sarah Barrow: “If you see him around campus, go and have a chat! Tell him you’re part of LSM and he’ll be interested to hear about your projects and plans.”

Good opportunity to meet a radio legend – er, Trevor’s also a Notts County supporter!

Graham’s Cycle for Life 2013

“I’m a bit sore now, but chuffed I did it.” Well done to LSM’s Senior Lecturer and graduate Graham Cooper on his Cycle for Life on 8th September 2013. The 70km bike ride was in aid of his chosen charity Farleigh Hospice. So far Graham’s raised £220 and he said you can still donate at his Just Giving page. “Any contribution however big or small would be gratefully received. Don’t forget to add gift aid so the tax man does his part, too! Ewen Glass

IMDB ProfileLSM Lecturer Ewen Glass was one of five filmmakers selected to be supported by Creative England to attend the prestigious talent development programme at last month’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF). EIFF Talent Lab took place during the festival and offered up-and-coming filmmakers the opportunity to learn from the world’s key film industry players. It brought together thirty emerging directors, producers and screenwriters with key UK and international film professionals in a number of ways to help advise and inspire them for the next steps in their careers.

In Edinburgh, Ewen benefited from a variety of advice sessions, workshops and masterclasses aimed at the next generation of film talent. He had the unmissable opportunity to discuss the industry, their projects and their ideas with a selection of invited industry professionals including sales agents, executive producers, literary agents, story editors and distributors. Ewen said: “An invaluable experience, one which not only arms you with a whole new set of professional contacts and an improved skillset, but which fosters a sense of community among up and coming film-makers.

Graham interprets Phillip Pullman

LSM Senior Lecturer Graham Cooper has completed a commission to produce a series of digital paintings and animations for a new theatre production of of His Dark Materials, based on the novels by Phillip Pullman.

Specialising in Digital Media, Graham was commissioned by the Royal & Derngate Youth Theatre in Northampton to produce a selection of art works for the adaptation. Continue reading →

Goodbye to Mike Mason

Mike MasonA very fond farewell from LSM’s staff and students to Mike Mason, Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Media Production, who has retired from the University of Lincoln. Mike moved into teaching after his artistic participation in the cultural sector in the UK and mainland Europe that encompassed mainstream and alternative media.

Mike’s message: I wish you all a great future in the full knowledge that the School of Media will continue to be the very best place to achieve what our students aspire to. I came to University as an undergraduate student in 1990 with the ambition to get a reasonable degree and hopefully move into teaching – I have succeeded in both those ambitions and much, much more. It is the ‘much more’ that means I will be leaving these hallowed halls a very happy chap indeed.” Continue reading →

LSM students return from Finland
