Iconic archive of photo-journalistic magazines will support research for students and staff at the University of Lincoln. The library team won a bid to completely house the collection of Picture Post, which is one of Britain’s most significant war-time publications. Lincoln School of Media Principal Lecturer Colin Reiners: “Our collection consists of every copy of Picture Post ever published, offering students direct access to material covering the social history of Britain between 1938 and 1957.” Lizzy Mitchell from the University Press Office shared the good news:
The collection, which consists of almost 50,000 pages, was gifted by the family of a local collector, whose affection for the publication saw him amass and preserve each individual copy of the magazine. It will now be stored in the University of Lincoln’s Zibby Garnett Library for special archive materials, overseen by the University’s Academic Subject Librarian, Dr Frederick Dickinson. Many congrats to Dr. Andrew Elliott, Senior Lecturer at the University of Lincoln School of Media, on his latest book ‘The Return Of The Epic Film: Genre, Aesthetics and History in the 21st Century’ (Edinburgh University Press, 2014). Andrew’s edited a collection of essays by those in the film and history fields.
He’s done an interview with The Economist and said “it’s great having to explain research this way. It was fun!” He talked about the epic film from its heyday to the part CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) has played in the genre’s comeback. Here is an extract:
“What would you say are the key elements that make a film an “epic”, rather than, say, an adventure movie? There are as many definitions of epic as there are film critics to come up with them, so I hesitate to try to offer a complete definition of my own. However, I think what most people understand by the term today is not only a historical setting (though for me that is important), but something to do with size and expense, as well as the scope of the narrative settings and the size of the cast. An Illustrated History.’ Rick’s a partner at literary agency The Blair Partnership, which manages J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter films & brand and currently working on the BBC TV’s series of The Casual Vacancy. Rick has forty years in the entertainment industry from Vice-chair at the British Film Institute to Director at revived Hammer Film Productions and the Soho Theatre.

While at Warner I was associated with many outstanding films, filmmakers and film franchises including the extraordinary Harry Potter series. This is Professor Mary Stuart’s book about the history of higher education in the UK. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln used real-life personal experiences from those who were the first people in their family to go to University. Mary said “I have tried to illustrate how higher education can and does transform the life chances of individual people from the humblest of backgrounds.”
The book titled ‘Social Mobility and Higher Education: The life experiences of first generation entrants in higher education’ is a culmination of a research project. It features autobiographical accounts from 150 people about how getting a degree changed their life chances. Continue reading

Jack has just self-published his first in a series of books about songwriting.
