Dave Clancy, Class of 2007 | My Career Update

DaveClancy-2007GradI can’t believe over four years have passed since my last update. As ever, loads has happened since then! Recently, I have returned to freelance life, after spending over five and a half years working at Linney Create, a rapidly expanding film production and digital agency based in Mansfield.

My time there was a real rollercoaster, working with a dedicated team of camera operators, producers, editors and writers to create around 400-plus films a year for clients ranging from Royal Mail to Triumph motorbikes. I was lucky enough to travel the world and work on some fantastic projects whilst at Linney, and really developed my own technical, creative and managerial skills. During my time at Linney I worked as a camera operator, editor, producer and also led the team of up to four in-house camera operators – a real juggling act! I also completed the required training and assessments to be granted permissions from the CAA to operate drones commercially – it was very exciting to be at the cutting edge of this new technology. My latest showreel demonstrates the variety of films I worked on during this time.

 I have been asked to write for the Alumni page a few times, but I have always had a goal in mind which I strived to achieve, before I started to look back.

Today I am sitting on a laptop in my apartment in West Hollywood, living a life I had dreamt about for over 14 years. So I thought it was a good time to write something.

This is a very long story, BUT if you prevail to the end, like all good stories, there are some valuable lessons inside.

From University to Editing

I got my first video camera for Christmas when I was 15 and never put it down. Like most, I grew up dreaming of working in Hollywood, directing movies.

I studied Media Production between 2007-2010 specialising in Single Camera and Digital Media. By the end of the course I was passionate about all aspects of the degree, even the parts I left behind in previous semesters. After graduating I was undecided on what to do next, my first thought was to do a Masters. In order to pay for it, I decided to take a year out, get the first job I could find as I saved up.

The job turned out to be the Mcdonalds at the end of my road. While working behind the grill, I applied for jobs and work experience at various production houses to gain media experience. After hundreds of emails and applications, and 7 or 8 interviews for Runner and junior positions, I was unsuccessful. I needed experience, which I was unable to get. Rachel Hagreen, Class of 2014 | Career Update: Sorted. Food!

A brand new blog post and another brand new job. That’s right, I’ve moved again. I’ve only been in London for under 2 years and this is already my third job.  But this one is the one.  In July 2015 I wrote a blog on here about having to start my own cooking channel because it was so difficult to get a job in online food video production. Little did I know that starting How To Kitchen would actually help me secure a job on my favourite cooking channel on YouTube, SORTEDfood.com. 

As of April 2016, I became a camera operator and editor for the channel and have loved every second of it so far. This was the video I filmed on my second day working for them. Needless to say I nearly threw up on my first shoot day (not even joking).

Since then, I’ve been busy shooting and editing a number of their varied videos. The interview process was absolutely terrifying. Continue reading →
