Indie-Lincs Film Festival | Micro-budget film entries are open

Indie-Lincs-2017-posterIt’s back! Film entries are open for Indie-Lincs NOW until 1st December 2016, with screenings to be held in March 2017 at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. The international film festival aims to ‘champion low and micro budget films, and their filmmakers.’ Films will compete for prizes in 5 categories from best feature to best short. For entry rules go to: http://www.indie-lincs.com

Organiser, LSFM Lecturer in film production, Mikey Murray said:  We are looking for dynamic, inventive and challenging fiction, documentary and animated micro-budget films completed after 1st January 2015. University of Lincoln students can have a free waiver to submit a film. Dr. Mikey Murray, LSFM | Award-winning Screenwriter/Filmmaker

Indie-Lincs-drinks-MikeyMurrayLecturer, multiple short award winning, Dr. Mikey Murray specialises in Film Production and Screenwriting at LSFM.  He started the Indie-Lincs film festival “to help independent filmmakers from around the world showcase their films in Lincoln.” Mikey is pictured social networking with students and he posted about the importance of collaboration from teaching to film-making. He’s been on-location directing Game of Thrones actor Kate Dickie on the set of ‘Natalie’. The film is due for release later this year – for now he found time to reflect … 

This time 6 years ago I was working a part-time job in the now defunct retail chain, Comet.  Why was I doing that? Because it was what I needed to do to at the time to pay the rent and give myself time to continue my vocation as a filmmaker. I did have an evening job teaching screenwriting at a local college too, and that was not only something I enjoyed, but it was also something that allowed me to stay fundamentally connected to the industry. I learned from my first teaching job that film education institutions are effectively industry hubs and therefore it didn’t take me long to apply for a Graduate Teaching Assistant position at Bangor University that would include PhD study in Film Practice. There was really no argument against packing my bags for North Wales as I’ve always believed that if I was willing to move anywhere, it would allow me to progress my career quicker. I’ve now had spells living and working in Scotland, London, Los Angeles and Wales before ending up here, in Lincoln.

LSFM Degree Show 2016 | Lincoln Theatre Royal on 14th & 15th May

LSFMdegreeshow2016_logo_400x400University of Lincoln School of Film and Media final year students will showcase their creative work at the Lincoln Theatre Royal THIS weekend, and YOU are invited. It is the first time the historic city venue has staged a two-day multimedia exhibition by third year undergraduates and it is the first time the annual event is off-campus. The LSFM Degree Show is an opportunity for the public to see original, experimental and creative content in the Grade II listed theatre: from pop-up spaces like the Writers’ Room and take part in script reading to dressing rooms transformed into individual cinema booths. Screenings will be in the 450-seat Victorian auditorium, also above and below the stage will be design and digital exhibitions. Even the bar will turn into a gallery and backstage a sound and radio installation space. The LSFM Degree Show is FREE and open to the public on Saturday 11am-7pm & Sunday 11am-4pm. Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor and some content may not be suitable for children. The Empty Throne, LSFM | Wins Educational Multimedia Award BUFVC

LSFM has won the British Universities Film and Video Council 2016 (BUFVC) Learning on Screen Educational Multimedia Award for The Empty Throne, directed by Philip Stevens (2010 alumnus & LSFM lecturer) Urban Apache Films and written by Laura Turner. Well done to the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media (staff, graduates, students, et al). The Empty Throne was a commission for the new arts and culture site 1215today.com: ‘It was created as the centrepiece for the website’s launch event at Lincoln Castle. The film was designed to give a tonal glimpse into some of the themes and events that led to the sealing of the Magna Carta by King John.’

Michael Henry, Class of 2009 | Official Trailer ‘MUTE’ (2016)

Michael Henry_2009GradIndependent filmmaker, who is one of our inspirational LSFM Industry Mentors, 2009 alumnus Michael Henry has posted an update on the latest development at Quandary Productions. 

We’ve recently released the official trailer to our latest feature film ‘MUTE’, written and directed by me, and here’s the synopsis:  Verbal communication has been outlawed by the rich elite, in an attempt to stop people speaking out against the conditions they live in. The new laws are enforced by the security department of the ‘Spectrum’ corporation – a huge conglomerate of the five biggest companies in the world. A voyeuristic filmmaker falls in love with an underground spoken word artist. As they find themselves unable to talk to one another, they start to make small films and write letters to one another. As the poet speaks out against ‘Spectrum’ and its owners, their lives become in danger. Will they be able to save each other in time?

To be released May of this year, on various platforms, including 4k Ultra HD, we’ll be looking to make this a huge hit at festivals around the world. Continue reading →

PAID Internship, Blueprint: Film | 2014 or 2015 Grad Opportunity

Blueprint-Film_LogoThis is a fabulous paid internship if you’re a University of Lincoln 2014 or 2015 graduate to work on a range of creative projects with multi-award winning production company Blueprint: Film.  It is a full-time position based in its Lincoln studio with flexible working hours to start in April 2016. The intern will have a range of media and office skills: researching; live sports web streaming/ webcasting, including the basics of vision mixing and camera and audio set-up (further training will be provided); and a knowledge of Final Cut Pro X and/or Adobe Creative Cloud would be useful.  You MUST have a valid driver’s licence and a vehicle because one of the largest projects the intern will work on will be a series of community cinema events across Lincolnshire.  The job includes travelling to different locations and working alone, so it is important that you are confident working on your own.

The Forecast (2015) at Cannes | By LSFM Grads, Staff & Students

The Forecast (2015) will be at the Cannes Film Festival, 16th-22nd May 2016, Short Film Corner. The film produced by Urban Apache Films was written by 2010 alumni Philip Stevens and Stewart MacGregor. The short has been screened at the London Short Film Festival, Kinofilm Film Festival and it’ll be at the new international IndieLincs Film Festival on 11th and 12th March. Indie-Lincs was established by the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media to champion low budget filmmakers and there will be over 30 shorts screened at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre.

The film was directed by Phil Stevens, who works part-time as a lecturer at the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media. Head of LSFM Dr Sarah Barrow said: Almost everyone on the production team was a member of staff or graduate, and some were LSFM students at the time the film was made last year. Continue reading →

International Indie-Lincs Film Festival | Tickets 11 & 12 March

Indie-Lincs-Film-FestivalNews about a NEW international film festival called Indie-Lincs from the Uni’s PR Officer Rob Wildman: Indie-Lincs was established by the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media to showcase the talents of original and creative filmmakers operating on low budgets, including media students from across the UK and overseas. Screenings and awards will take place on the 11th and 12th March 2016.  Indie-Lincs Film Fest Director is LSFM Lecturer in Film Production Dr Mikey Murray:  We have been delighted by the response to our new festival and we are screening over 30 films from all over the world. We genuinely hope that the local community will get behind us and come down to join in.

Chris Riley, Visiting Professor & Filmmaker | Short Poyekhali!

Visiting-Prof-Chris-RileySee the short for British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake to mark his first orbit of the Earth, today 15.12.2015 at 11.03 GMT. Poyekhali! (2015) is made by filmmaker, who is the University of Lincoln’s Visiting Professor, Chris Riley. The film was created in collaboration with composer Úlfur Eldjárn. “Poyekhali! blends Yuri Gagarin’s preparations for his first historic orbit of the Earth on the 12th April 1961 with those of British astronaut Tim Peake as he prepares to leave from the same space port on the 15th December 2015, to make his own first orbit.” #ForTim  #Principia

Rachel Sweet, Class of 2014 | Creator Sweet Essence Media

Rachel-Sweet-GraduateDuring my final year at Lincoln School of Film & Media (2014) I worked solo on projects and this was all down to what I could personally do, to understand what are my strengths & weaknesses – of course I loved every moment of working in a group because it was an extraordinary experience & I will never forget the people I once worked with.  I have always been passionate with my work & I have loved the feeling of having the freedom of what I can produce, so I discovered a few weeks after graduation I could develop my own business. The planning process of creating a business took me just over a year to establish, it has been a long & winding road over the last twelve months but it has been worth the time & in order to build a business you need to be 100% in what you are doing you need to be sure that everything meets the criteria.

I got guidance from multiple sources while I was in the “thinking” stages of starting up a business & they were much needed, I have attended meetings from the (Uni) Careers & Employability team. Continue reading →
