Aleysha Minns, Class of 2013 | Film, Key Locations Assistant

I genuinely cannot believe it has been over 4 years since I graduated from Lincoln, time has definitely flown by. As always, it’s been another eventful year for me in the world of feature films. In just over a year, I have gone from being a Locations Trainee to Key Locations Assistant on some of the biggest films currently being made in the UK. My involvement in these are still under wraps and I can’t wait for them to hit cinema (one is due in just over a month!)

In other news, LSFM Mentoring: my 4th mentee finished her final year and did incredibly well! I’m very proud of Hannah Darby and she is definitely going to go far. I shall hopefully be meeting my 5th mentee very soon. I have also been selected as one of 50 people to join the HETV Connect scheme based around High-End Drama recruitment, sponsored by thecallsheet.co.uk and Creative Skillset. Continue reading →

Meet the Graduates is our annual alumni networking event between our current and former students. It’s a superb opportunity to share experiences and make connections with the working world. MtG 2016 held its popular Question Time hosted by Daniel J Layton (Class of 2012). Our audience with alumni spoke about life post-university on anything our students wanted to know. New Media Lincs student crew Daisy Sadeh (Year 1), Bradley Nicholls, Filip Grzejszczyk and James Hunter (in Year 2) captured the Q & A session with LSFM’s Associate Lecturer Andrew West (Class of 2014) who produced this clip.

As September has come and gone again, seeing my 3rd LSFM media mentee with her graduation photos, it just reminds me of how long ago 2013 feels. The past 3 years have been a bit of a rollercoaster, with the past 12 months being some of the most difficult but incredible of my career so far.

The last half of 2015 was tough, finding work was a nightmare and I was ready to give up on the whole thing. That was until February of this year, when I got to live out my childhood dream of working at Pinewood Studios on my first big budget film, taking the leap from Production to the Locations/Studio department as a trainee. Confidentiality surrounding these types of films mean I can’t say anything about it until release, but I spent up until August there and has been the lift that I needed. Since then I’ve been working on commercials and have been accepted into BAFTA Crew 2016, which is a huge honour and made it on to the list on my 2nd attempt. To top off the year, Beautiful Devils (2015) premièred at Cannes Film Festival to a great reception and my first ever film credit on ID2:Shadwell Army (2016) recently came out in cinemas and DVD. Aleysha Minns, Class of 2013 | Career Update: Working in Film

I have just finished working as a Production Trainee on the feature film ID2: Shadwell Army (2016), which was shot entirely in Hull. After a few years of hard work, gaining a place on Channel 4’s 4Crew and becoming a Skillset Film Trainee, both came together to provide contacts as well as funding to help me gain my first feature film role in the relatively small but amazing production team. The film is a sequel to ID, released in 1995, and had two incredible Producers, Sally Hibbin (Ken Loach’s producer) and Patrick Cassavetti [Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)] who both felt very strongly about providing film training for local people. I spent 7 weeks helping to create our fictional Shadwell and learnt so much about working in Production as well as how feature film works.

The cast was also incredible, with the likes of Simon Rivers, Linus Roache (pictured with me), Neil Pearson and Lee Ross, I learnt a lot from watching and speaking to them on set/in the office as well as helping them out with anything they needed. Being a trainee in a smaller team means that you get to know every person in every department and receive much broader training. Continue reading →

Meet the Graduates | Video on job interviews

Meet the Graduates is just one of Lincoln School of Film & Media‘s popular networking events between our creative alumni and students. The most recent symposium was on-campus, last October, with a packed audience at the Graduate Question Time. On the panel were alumni from 2003 to 2014: Video Director Lewis Cater, Digital Strategist Jo Graham (doing a KTP at Mortons Media Group), Screenwriter Tony Kelly, 4Crew Production Co-ordinator Aleysha Minns, freelance sound operator / technician Tom Ward and Wallbreaker Productions Producer Ashley Wilks.

The video is on their experiences about going for job interviews in the creative industries and it was captured by LSFM student crew via New Media Lincs. Thanks to 2nd year Audio Production undergraduate Mihail Sustov and 3rd year Media Production students Alex Faulkner & Rory McCarney. This piece (and the vox pop, see previous post) was produced by Rory.

Industry alumni on-campus | Mondays 10 Nov-1 Dec 5-6pm | EMMTEC

Our alumni networking with students at Meet the Graduates is a main event at the Lincoln School of Film & Media. But LSFM have alumni coming on-campus all year to share their experiences with students. Senior Lecturer Dave McCaig has organised graduates from industry on Mondays: 10, 17, 24 Nov and 1st Dec. He said: these alumni demonstrate the strength of the multi-disciplinary degrees at LSFM. With a strong background in media practices during their degrees and a combination of hard work and ambition, these guest speakers have shown that the School’s highly valued in the media industries. We are very pleased that our graduates have returned to pass on their knowledge. Monday in EMMTEC 5-6pm:

Mon 10th November Sean Strange, Class of 2013: As well as doing his own freelance work Sean is currently a staff photographer at F/stop Event Photography. His previous experience includes, events photographer for The Imperial War Museum and press photographer for RAF Waddington.

Mon 17th November Aleysha Minns, Class of 2013: AV freelancer with experience at Revolver Films, C4 and C5 amongst others. Also one of LSFM inspirational industry mentors. She said: what do you want to know about the world of TV? Send me some suggestions to include (on 17th)!

Mon 1st Dec Darren Scales, Class of 2008: Indie Filmmaker at Backyard Productions. His latest community project on a £5000 budget was The Drift film. It was created with the help of volunteers and LSFM media students & graduates.

2013 graduate and freelancer Aleysha Minns, who is one of our inspiring LSFM mentors, is now officially self-employed and said: My website is finally live! What a long and interesting journey it has been. I think the mistake I made was starting to set it up too early, I was at a point were my work was still based around my student work and I was only just beginning my freelance career. I am still in the starting stages, but at least I have some credited work. Thank you very much to my web designer/developer Sam Kelham for putting up with me all this time. I definitely recommend him if you need anything like this done and can visit his website here.

This video is a showcase of some of my most recent work including work with Channel 4 and FyreUK. It shows my skills in a range of areas such as Production Management, Camera Operator, Producer and Director over different genres.
