Media Mentoring 2018-19 | Industry and LSFM

Sean Strange Media MentorUniversity of Lincoln School of Film and Media (LSFM) officially launched this month its Industry Mentoring between 20 professionals and undergraduates for 2018-19. Each academic year, we confirm media mentors who’re available to volunteer time from their busy workload to support students who applied for this 1-to-1 employability opportunity. LSFM Mentoring started as a pilot, in 2014-15 with the Uni’s Careers Team, and now has over 40 professionals on its mentors’ database. The School’s proud that the majority of mentors are our alumni. Ian Pook, Class of 2007 is a Brand & PR Designer based in Bristol. He has clients from M&S to White Stuff, and has been our media mentor for 3 years:  Meeting my mentoree in person was very good to build a more relaxed and productive relationship going forward. Gemma Lowe, Class of 2012 | Career in Communications

IGemmaLowe-2017pic’ve been following the LSFM blog and it is great to see what everyone has been up to since graduating; it seems a long time ago since I was the one wearing the gown in 2012 and it is amazing how much can happen in in five years! I have worked in a number of roles since graduation, some that were directly linked to where I am now and some that helped me get here even though I didn’t know it at the time.

Following the school radio project in the third year of my Media Production degree, I’ve had an interest in education. Initially, I wasn’t sure how I could combine this with my interest in media but I decided to just take any opportunities that came my way and see where I ended up! Continue reading →

1000+ days later… Rachel Hagreen on life after LSM & University

Rachael-Hagreen_UpdatedPicWell, that’s it. Somehow three years (or roughly 1018 days) have just passed and University has officially finished with me. The past year has been the best of my life so far, and that is purely down to genuinely loving the course (even the dissertation) and meeting a cracking set of friends following the University trip to Latvia back in October.

As much as I don’t want to leave University life, I now feel completely ready to move on to whatever’s next. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work on a lot of extra projects (paid and unpaid) during my three years in Lincoln and those are the things that have really given me the confidence that I have now. Whether you’re going into your first or second year, or even final year I can’t express enough how important it is to get that extra bit of experience. The course is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but there’s going to be a couple of hundred people graduate with the same degree as you in ONE year from that ONE course in Lincoln alone. It’s no secret that jobs are hard to come by in this industry but if you do something extra on the side that will set you apart from those hundreds of other people in the same position as you, it’ll really make a difference when you leave. Media Culture 2020 – Snapshot of Two Weeks by LSM Student Blogger

Hello! Rachel Hagreen, LSM’s student blogger and third year Media Production Student here… I’m now home from Latvia and can safely say it’s been the most tiring two weeks of my life, but absolutely incredible.  Here’s a snapshot of the EU-funded Media Culture 2020 Project.

MC2020_ringoffireWe left Lincoln at 2:30am on 26th and arrived in Liepaja at 7pm on the 27th… After not sleeping for at least 48 hours, the British felt now would be a good time to showcase our greatest talents; drinking. Needless to say, all the multiple bottle of free wine didn’t last very long and we managed to conduct a king size game of Ring of Fire across the multiple nationalities.

The next day we woke up (not very) bright-eyed and bushy tailed to begin our first day of Media Culture 2020.  The day began with everybody giving a one minute introduction to themselves.

Following this we broke into our individual concept groups and begin preparing the presentations we had already started working on in our home towns.

Boom in media opportunities

We have recently seen a dramatic boost in Media opportunities, so much so we have been struggling to keep track. This increase has not only come from big recruiters such as the BBC, who are set to host various careers focused events in different locations throughout the year, but there has also been a steady increase in adverts from local small medium enterprises alongside more unexpected companies like Branston Potatoes and the NHS.
