Call out for creatives from Hazel Donnelly at New Media Lincs. It’s the LSM’s social enterprise initiative, which links students with businesses and arts & crafts organisations to provide creative media solutions. Hazel sums up the latest opportunities for students:

Can you design a mobile app for the NHS to promote Family and Healthy Lifestyle services? This is an exciting project with immense potential. Open to Year 2 and Year 3 students.

Our fledgling business New Media Lincs requires a poster made to promote our services to students. The poster will be used for the Careers Fair this year at the university and for subsequent promotional opportunities.

Radio Legend Trevor Dann is at LSM

Visiting Professor Trevor Dann is at the Lincoln School of Media today. He’ll be on campus over the next couple of days and said, modestly, there’ll be “lots of radio folks who know more than I do!” Trevor will be “leading talks, workshops, debates and offering tons of practical advice” said Head of LSM Sarah Barrow: “If you see him around campus, go and have a chat! Tell him you’re part of LSM and he’ll be interested to hear about your projects and plans.”

Good opportunity to meet a radio legend – er, Trevor’s also a Notts County supporter!

Ab Fab! RTS Midlands Award for LSM Students’ Film ‘Dead Swan’

We’re very proud of you. Well done. Congratulations to the team behind the Royal Television Society winner ‘Dead Swan’. Pictured with actor Mark Williams at RTS Midlands awards on 17 Oct 2013. A fantastic achievement for the LSM. Our creative undergraduates won the RTS Midlands Student Award in the Entertainment category.

‘Dead Swan’ is a comedy fiction by final students, which was made as a second year project – this is a particularly fine achievement because it’s rare that 2nd year student work is nominated by the RTS. The award winning film was made by undergraduates: Thomas McKie, Marc Piper, Aidan Barker-Dean, Alex Whitcombe, Bethany Hoggarth-Hall. The tutor was Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock.

Guest Lecture – Phil Harding

Phil Harding’s track record is incredible. As a recording engineer and producer he has worked with artists as diverse as The Clash, Killing Joke, Dead Or Alive, Kylie Minogue and East 17.

As part of his lecture tour to promote his book PWL: From The Factory Floor he came to the University and gave a very entertaining and informative lecture to a packed audience of Audio Production students.

The main thrust of Phil’s lecture was how different aspects of the music industry service each other and why this is something to bear in mind when fulfilling a particular role. He talked about the importance of group work in gaining these skills and about how having the right attitude is essential for success in an industry that relies so heavily on professional relationships. Frequency Festival 18th-26th October 2013: LSM Highlights

Frequency Festival 2013 is almost here! Fly the flag from 18th to 26th October in Lincoln. It’s a great opportunity to view, listen to and interact with a wide range of digital art & media. Head of LSM, Sarah Barrow wanted to signpost a couple of highlights from the Lincoln School of Media:

The screening of a 13 hour video installation by our very own Visiting Professor of Science and Media Chris Riley, Apollo Raw and Uncut, on Saturday 19th October, 9am-10pm, in LPAC. You can drop in any time. It’s incredible work. Another highlight for us is the provocative multimedia work of our colleague and LSM’s graduate Mike Downing. Look out for festivals pocket guide on campus and in Lincoln city. You can preview most of the artists’ work online and follow the Festival on Facebook. The Frequency 13 trailer’s created by LSM alumnus Graham Cooper and sound track from LSM’s Senior Lecturer David McSherry.

The launch party is on 17th October on the Cornhill from 6pm ’til late…

Award Winning Andrew West: Update from the Houses of Parliament

Winning the ICS photography competition and having my photography exhibited at the Houses of Parliament was a bonus! Travelling to Honduras and working with the human rights organisation Jóvenes Liderando Cambios and Progressio as part of the ICS scheme was fantastic, in 3 months I gained so much experience.

BBC work experience placements. Plus advice from our graduates.

The BBC is taking applications for work experience placements this November and December. Deadline’s 14th October. The beeb highlights that “you will only be able to apply for one Work Experience category – TV, Radio, Online or Business and Support. There is no separate category for online work, but all categories offer placements that have a strong interactive element. When you choose your category and fill in your online application, we’ll ask you some questions about what interests you and where in the UK you want to be based. 2 Royal Television Society Nominations for Students & Graduates

Whoopee! Another fantastic achievement for the LSM. Our creative undergraduates and alumni are in the RTS Midlands Student Award Nominations in the Entertainment and Factual categories. Sarah Barrow, Head of the Lincoln School of Media, is delighted and summed up the films:

iMAGESKOOL – documentary by graduates was made as a final year project. The film was made by: Catrin Wright, Danielle Watson, Daniel Munns, Lucas Hattersley. Tutor was Senior Lecturer/Joint Media Production Programme Leader Janice Kearns.

International Photography Award for Student Andrew West

Congratulations from the Lincoln School of Media. LSM’s Media Production final year student Andrew West participated in the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme this summer in Honduras and entered its photography competition and won the ‘Civic Participation’ category. Andy’s going to the Houses of Parliament tomorrow to have his photo exhibited with the other winners and has been asked to make a speech in front of the MPs!

Andrew’s winning image was the Feria Day and women’s football tournament in the Lenca community, Los Encinos in Honduras. The photo belongs to Andrew G West and all rights are reserved.
