LSFM Society, Launch Party | 29.03.2019 at The Platform

The University of Lincoln Students’ Union will launch the brand new Lincoln School of FIlm & Media Society on Friday 29th March. The event will be held in The Platform, above The Engine Shed, from 6:30pm to 8.00pm and all at LSFM are welcome to come. Here’s a message from President of the LSFM Society, Media Production student, Naomi Lawson:

The event will essentially be an opportunity to experience a taster social at The Platform. There’ll be a finger-food buffet, the bar will be open and there will board games and a quiz with prizes. The committee will do a short presentation about what our society is and what we intend to do, but other than this it will be a chance to socialise and meet students and staff from different areas of LSFM.

Thanks to professionals who kindly volunteer their time from their busy work schedules to mentor a student from the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media. Thanks to all for participating. Our Grad Question Time was hosted by Steve Smailes (Class of 2012) with alumni from 2002 to 2017 who shared their experiences, tips and advice about the world of work – at home and abroad. We loved the live link-up with video editor Philip Roberts (Class of 2006) from Crytek in Frankfurt.

Meet the Graduates | 8 Nov 2017 Industry Network Event at LSFM

Our current and former students are invited to the Uni of Lincoln School of Film & Media’s free networking event Meet the Graduates. On Wednesday 8th November join this gathering between our alumni and students – staff too! MtG 2017 is your on-campus opportunity to connect with like-minded creatives and make industry links. STUDENTS please take your theatre seat for 2pm in the Stephen Langton Building and ask anything you’d like to know from our alumni who work – on staff and freelance contracts – across the media industry from big corporates (BBC TV) to independents (Epix Media).

Meet the Graduates | 8th Nov 2017 LSFM Networking Event

Head of Lincoln School of Film & Media Professor Steven Peacock posted: We hope you’ll join LSFM on the afternoon of Wednesday 8th November 2017 at Brayford Pool campus for the great gathering between our graduates and students. I’d like to meet you, so hope we can connect at MtG.

MtG 2017 will be in the Stephen Langton Building. Our network event will start at 12.30pm with a buffet lunch for alumni. At 2pm LSFM students will have the opportunity for an audience with alumni at the popular, frank, Graduate Question Time. From 3.30pm there’ll be a networking session; one-to-one between students, fellow grads and staff over a drinks reception. Steven Peacock-1Welcome to Professor Steven Peacock who is the new Head of Lincoln School of Film & Media (LSFM) at the College of Arts, University of Lincoln. Steven said: I am delighted to join LSFM and am excited by the wide range of programmes and wealth of initiatives being implemented across the School. We are at the cutting-edge in content and delivery of our teaching and research, and I look forward to developing more collaborations, across Schools and internationally, in the future.

HistoLyrical released on http://1215today.com/histolyrical-artwork/ today (7 June at 12-noon). The site has an interview with the artists, Ben Peppiatt and Stephanie Bickford-Smith, about their online work that developed from asking young people “is the hysteria of social media compromising freedom of thought?” HistoLyrical explores how social media influences people’s thought processes through subliminal messages.

Gazing out of a train window and lulled by a trance-enducing soundtrack, our thoughts are interrupted, hijacked by the random thoughts and ruminations of others by a stream of words layered over our view. We are given the choice to abandon ourselves to these random musings or take control and banish them with a click of a button.’ The artists feel that “Social media sites are super efficient platforms that aid connectivity and information exposure. Increasingly they are becoming our gateway to the internet. However these sites are designed for consumption rather than contemplation, with HistoLyrical we are interested in questioning the impact this has upon our ability to think and process information coherently and what a more contemplative solution inspired by offline behaviours could look like.” Continue reading →

Dr Mikey Murray, LSFM | Film @ Edinburgh International Film Fest

Dr.MikeyMurray-onlocation-NatalieCongratulations to multiple award winning filmmaker Dr. Mikey Murray, lecturer in Film Production and Screenwriting at LSFM, for his latest short Natalie (2017) to be screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) 2017. He posted on social media that he was “absolutely thrilled to announce that Natalie will have its world premiere in competition at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 24th.” Writer and Director Mikey is pictured on-location with actress Kate Dickie (aka Lysa Arryn in Game of Thrones, 2011-14) who played the lead role. She has been involved with the story for many years and Mikey’s idea was a 2015 Kick- starter project. Kate said: “I was drawn to the script of Natalie because I love Mikey’s writing – it’s really honest, raw and truthful. I loved the story and subject matter of the film.” 

The Scottish film – about ‘a transexual who travels home to her father’s funeral in order to gain closure with her prejudiced family’ –  is in the EIFF Best Short Film category.  Mikey, founder of Indie-Lincs international film festival, has been selected to take part in the EIFF Talent Lab development sessions to support aspiring film- makers. Mikey said: Of course, I’d like to dream that I have some brilliant individual talent as a screenwriter and filmmaker, but the truth is that I have only ever made successful work through meeting and working with hugely talented collaborators. I was able to cast Game of Thrones actor, Kate Dickie in my short film recently because my high school friend (who I still work with) was able to put my screenplay in her hands. Prof Dave Boothroyd | Exhibition: Sharing Extreme Circumstances

An exhibition exploring the online relationships and behaviour of people affected by extreme circumstances was on display, last month, at Lincoln Drill Hall.  A series of portrait photographs, by artist Anton Want, and thought-provoking statements formed part of a wider collaborative research project, called A Shared Space & A Space for Sharing.

Dave Boothroyd, Professor of Media and Culture at LSFM is pictured and he leads the research about online illicit drug use. University of Lincoln PR officer Laura Jones covered the story: The project explores what information people choose to share online when they find themselves in difficult and dangerous circumstances, such as natural disasters, life-threatening illness and illicit drug use. It considers what this teaches us about how trust and empathy are established and maintained in online relationships, and how sharing, trust and empathy work in the offline world. The project is being carried out by the University of Lincoln in collaboration with the University of Sheffield, University of Edinburgh, University of Warwick, University of Nottingham and King’s College London.
