Aleysha Minns on her Internship, at MtG 2014 & LSM Media Mentor

February has been a busy month! I have just about completed my Production Assistant internship at Warp Films in Sheffield and I have had the best time, not just for experience, but because I am a huge fan of their films. I have experienced working in their head office with some extremely talented and well-respected people, such as multiple BAFTA award winning Diarmid Scrimshaw, the Producer of ‘Tyrannasaur’, which was such a highlight for me.

While I was there, I had the chance to work on a wide range of tasks such as, working with contracts and preparing paperwork for distribution companies, checking transcripts for DVDs, film development research and valuable administration experience. I also got to experience the feeling of excitement of a film appearing at film festivals and waiting for reviews and award nominations to come in. I learnt so much from this experience and have enjoyed every minute of it.  Continue reading →

Media Graduate & Freelance Cameraman Daniel Bowring

daniel-bowring_media-technology_2009grad2009 Media Technology alumnus Daniel Bowring works as a freelance camera operator and assistant for productions working with Bear Grylls to Freddie Flintoff.  He feels that working as a runner laid the foundations for his future career: “You really have to be prepared to start at the bottom in this industry, I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to be a cameraman to start off working in a camera facilities company. You’ll learn a lot and they’ll still keep hiring you freelance after you’ve left.”  The University’s alumni team caught up with Dan about flying the world:

Daniel’s work has recently been featured on the ‘Mountains’ episode of Bear Grylls’ Escape From Hell, where he filmed the survival expert perform stunts and survival techniques across the Dolomites mountain range in north-eastern Italy. He said: “It was great filming. Bear’s a really nice guy. It’s a lot of pressure though, he wouldn’t particularly want to jump down a Mountain into icy water more than once so, you really had to try to get everything perfect on the first take.” Continue reading →

Wall Breaker-logo1LSM’s Level 3 project group Wall Breaker Productions need your support to make a short film ‘The Fisherman’.  It has a Kickstarter campaign with the goal to raise £950 (which’ll be added to the £1,000 in the Wall Breaker’s pot). WATCH & VOTE for your Favourite Film: DONE IN 60 SECONDS

jamesonempiredonein60secondsIt’ll only take 20 minutes to watch twenty 1-minute films and then vote for your favourite entry in the ‘Done in 60 Seconds‘ shorts! Heads up from Sarah Barrow is that from hundreds of submissions, 2 of the 20 shortlisted are from LSM graduates: Entry 7 ‘There will be Bitter’ by Ross McGowan and Entry 15 ‘Super Size Me’ by Joseph Fallon (and Jonathan Sankey). At least the first one has input from LSM students, like Year 3 Tom Anderson.  Here’s what the organisers at Jameson Empire Awards 2014 said:

The challenge was clear: remake a classic (or not-so-classic) film in no more than one minute. Hundreds of people slaved away on their mini-masterpieces, and our panel of judges has chosen the 20 best UK entries… But now the buck passes to you! We need you to watch the lot – and choose your favourite. WATCH all shorts and VOTE now!

Voluntary Work Opportunity – Short Doco for soundLINCS

soundLINCS_B15Can you help to create a short documentary for soundLINCS to capture its B15 event, which’ll celebrate 15 years of community music and try to break a World Record on 3rd May 2014? soundLINCS is a not-for-profit community music group and organisers said: “The event will see 1500 musicians come together to play a brand new piece of music and attempt to break a world record and we hope that this opportunity could give the volunteers some great experience and footage for their showreel, as well as a chance to be a part of this unique day. We would like a team (or individual) who could film the rehearsals during the day and interview the musicians, composers and volunteers. There may also be the chance to film at some of the smaller group rehearsals, but dates of these are still to be confirmed. Meet LSM Graduate: Indie filmmaker Mike Henry, Class of 2009

We’ve passed the half way point of the film now and it looks like the only major problem we could have with upcoming shoot dates is the weather. Our eleventh day was a bit of an odd one (even by our standards). We started off by shooting a quick few shots, which required Shaun Woodgates to cover his face in flour and lie face down in a field (he’s an incredibly dedicated chap so we knew we could rely on him). After laying, surrounded by several mounds of horse dung (and battling the extreme wind), we headed to Charles Cromwell’s house to finish off his remaining scenes. Continue reading … 

Meet LSM Graduate: Asst Producer Jordan Livermore, Class of 2009

Hello. I’m an Assistant Producer on the third series of Gadget Man – very chuffed indeed! I keep meaning to write a blog post, but work is relentless at the moment.

Meet LSM Graduate: TV Editor Stuart Lutes, Class of 2001

Stuart-LutesStuart Lutes is a freelance TV Editor who’s worked on TV shows from Big Brother to Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe – currently he’s editing Series 2. Stuart’s going to be joining 30 of LSM’s industry alumni at ‘Meet the Graduates’ on 12 Feb and he’ll be one of our new media mentors. Somehow he’s managed to squeeze in a story on our blog, too. Stuart-Lutes_TVEd_Weekly-WipeSeries2In terms of employment hints and tips, I’m happy to talk to the students directly but, it generally boils down to getting a job in any profession.  Display a willingness to learn, a willingness to work hard (even for free), show initiative and finally, some level of aptitude. The TV industry can be a cruel beast, with everyone working long hours and usually up against tight deadlines so, ‘dead weight’ or laziness just simply won’t be tolerated.  On the flipside, if you can demonstrate an ability to listen, carry out instructions accurately and efficiently, be personable and have a  tough skin, you’ll be highly valued, employable and most importantly, trusted and you’ll go very far.  So, after graduating in 2001, I was lucky enough to leapfrog the nightmare of being a runner and my career as a Video Editor began down in London three months later … Continue reading →
