TomSka on TV about YouTube

Tom Ridgewell TomSkaLSM graduate Thomas Ridgewell (a.k.a TomSka) is a digital media producer and he creates content on YouTube. The video sharing site has just celebrated its eighth birthday (23rd April) and TomSka talked on Sky News about his YT work.

Tom started his YouTube channel when he was a second year LSM undergraduate and now he’s listed as a successful British YouTube creator. TomSka is in the top twenty of the most popular online video bloggers on YouTube UK, as we posted earlier this month, along with his fellow LSM Graduate Chris Bingham.  You can see the top twenty list online in the Guardian/ the Observer.

‘Don’t be a plonker!’ Save TV Centre Studios

Today is the official launch of the ‘Save Television Centre Studios’ campaign. It aims to halt demolishing five of the UK’s working studios. Chris Hainstock, LSM’s Senior Lecturer, has been party to the press launch: 

poster_plonkertvcThe campaign has been set up by a group of TV industry veterans – directors, producers, sound engineers, technicians, crew and many others from all walks of television production – who all feel passionately about the demolition of not only some of the best working TV studios in the country, but the destruction of such an iconic and magical place to work. BFI Doc Next Media Lab. Apply by – 29th April. We’re looking for 10 filmmakers to become part of the BFI’s Doc Next Media Lab. As part of the Lab you’ll receive a £750 bursary, technical film training from professionals, tutoring on different documentary styles, methods and ideas, and the chance to develop and hone your art into something special. Student Ents:  Apply by ­ 24th April. Our new termly brief, designed to give students the financial and marketing support to run a successful creative event for their peers. The event could be anything ­ an exhibition, screening, social or talk ­ we don’t mind as long as it has a creative focus. Update on the Lancaster Film Project

Lincoln School of Media graduates and some of our students have been on-location to shoot a short called ‘Lancaster’.

It is a period drama about the Lancaster bomber crew on what would turn out to be their final mission across occupied Europe.  Graduate Phil Stevens & Red Dog Film was commissioned by East Lindsey District Council to make this film for the Lancaster’s 75th anniversary later this year. LANC_DAY3 - 29The crew are now in the editing stage, and sound post production will take place at the Lincoln Sound Theatre in the School of Media. ‘Lancaster’ is due to premier in June.

LSM’s Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock said: “The Lancaster film project has just finished four days’ shooting in and around Lincolnshire. Written and directed by some of our graduates, Phil Stevens and Lewis Gemmill. The Director of Photography is another graduate Stewart MacGregor, and Denise Barry was make up/wardrobe.

I have set up a Twitter feed @lancastermovie and also a Facebook page. A big thank you to Tom Mckie (Level 2 media prod student) and Ross McGowan (Level 3 media prod student) who acted as camera assistants and runners for the entire shoot, including the night shoot 5pm to 7am!”

LSM graduates in the UK top 20 video bloggers

LSM graduates and Youtube stars Chris Bingham (SLOMOZOVO) and Tom Ridgewell (TOMSKA) have been included in Britain’s 20 most popular online video bloggers, both on the Guardian website and in the Observer on Sunday.

David Clancy’s update

Dave Clancy_April2013This is my first blog post for a while – and in that time a lot has happened! I’ll quickly run through my life since Uni via a few links to previous blog posts, then bring you up to date with where I am currently, followed by a few hints & tips for current students.

For example, attend events like Meet the Graduates – I wish they’d had this back in my day! It’s a good chance to compare and contrast people who were in your shoes quite recently and figure out the direction you want to take.  I graduated from Media Production in 2007.  I was fortunate enough to immediately find work with Interflora British Unit as their in-house Video Producer.   Continue reading

LSM hosts the inaugural BAFTSS conference

From Sarah Barrow: The inaugural conference of the British Association of Film, TV and Screen Studies takes place here next week, Fri 19th to Sun 21st April. Professor Mary Stuart will open proceedings at 2pm on the Friday followed by an introduction from BAFTSS chair Prof Brian Winston. Guest of honour (receiving a lifetime achievement award) is confirmed as acclaimed feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey! Her keynote is on the Friday at 4.30pm, followed by a screening of “Riddles of the Sphynx”, followed by a reception to launch the Journal of Popular Television. Red Dog to make Lancaster Bomber film

East Lindsey District Council have commissioned Red Dog Film to make a period drama set in Lincolnshire during World War II about the iconic Lancaster bomber. Just Jane is a bomber whose restoration has been a passion for Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage centre and will no doubt feature in the film.

LSM graduate Phil Stevens is directing, and LSM Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock has set up a dedicated Facebook page where you can follow the progress of the production.
