The Forecast (2015) at Cannes | By LSFM Grads, Staff & Students

The Forecast (2015) will be at the Cannes Film Festival, 16th-22nd May 2016, Short Film Corner. The film produced by Urban Apache Films was written by 2010 alumni Philip Stevens and Stewart MacGregor. The short has been screened at the London Short Film Festival, Kinofilm Film Festival and it’ll be at the new international IndieLincs Film Festival on 11th and 12th March. Indie-Lincs was established by the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media to champion low budget filmmakers and there will be over 30 shorts screened at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre.

The film was directed by Phil Stevens, who works part-time as a lecturer at the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media. Head of LSFM Dr Sarah Barrow said: Almost everyone on the production team was a member of staff or graduate, and some were LSFM students at the time the film was made last year. Continue reading →

International Indie-Lincs Film Festival | Tickets 11 & 12 March

Indie-Lincs-Film-FestivalNews about a NEW international film festival called Indie-Lincs from the Uni’s PR Officer Rob Wildman: Indie-Lincs was established by the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media to showcase the talents of original and creative filmmakers operating on low budgets, including media students from across the UK and overseas. Screenings and awards will take place on the 11th and 12th March 2016.  Indie-Lincs Film Fest Director is LSFM Lecturer in Film Production Dr Mikey Murray:  We have been delighted by the response to our new festival and we are screening over 30 films from all over the world. We genuinely hope that the local community will get behind us and come down to join in.

Chris Riley, Visiting Professor & Filmmaker | Short Poyekhali!

Visiting-Prof-Chris-RileySee the short for British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake to mark his first orbit of the Earth, today 15.12.2015 at 11.03 GMT. Poyekhali! (2015) is made by filmmaker, who is the University of Lincoln’s Visiting Professor, Chris Riley. The film was created in collaboration with composer Úlfur Eldjárn. “Poyekhali! blends Yuri Gagarin’s preparations for his first historic orbit of the Earth on the 12th April 1961 with those of British astronaut Tim Peake as he prepares to leave from the same space port on the 15th December 2015, to make his own first orbit.” #ForTim  #Principia

Lucy Davies, Student Work Experience | Whistledown Productions

Lucy-Davies_pic_2015GraduandFrom the 8th June until 12th June I received a brilliant opportunity to work at an independent radio production company called Whistledown Productions. The indie produce weekly programmes for BBC Radio 4 including Feedback, BBC World Service’s Over to You as well as several documentaries on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. Whistledown have won a variety of awards for their work including a Sony Award in 2003 and Indie of the Year at the Radio Production Awards 2014.

I undertook several jobs at the company which included learning how to use SADiE which is a piece of editing software that the BBC use and is a very important programme to learn if you want to create programmes for the BBC. Continue reading →

Emily McSorley, 2015 Graduand | Intern now a Job, North One TV

EmilyMcSorely_2015GradI was fortunate enough to receive a four week work placement with North One Television on June the 1st. After just finishing my final year jumping into this four week internship was amazing! From my first year I always knew I wanted to work in television so I worked incredibly hard to receive work experience including one week as an Office Runner at Objective Productions, freelance work as a Junior Researcher and working on a Lincolnshire feature film as a Production Assistant. It was these snippets of work experience and an obvious determination to work in factual entertainment that I believe secured me this position and I would urge all students to take on whatever experience you can as it will benefit you massively when applying for entry level positions. Mentoring | LSFM and Industry

LSFM Mentoring is a unique way to link industry with selected undergraduates. Thanks to volunteer mentors from the world of work who make time to support our final year or level 2 students in an academic year.  Each mentor brings their unique experience of the job market to help our students, during their course, as they plan goals and pursue passions for a career. In the past our mentors and mentees have explored everything from work opportunities to discussing dissertations. Pairs are in contact at least 6 times across semesters, so may be around 6-12 hours during the academic year. Contact time is flexible and pairs choose how to meet: face-to-face, talking on the phone, having a web chat or using other online platforms.

Mentors are offered an induction to mentoring, written guidelines and thereafter the student-mentee liaises with their mentor. Louise Davies, Film & TV Student | Work Experience at Big Talk

Louise-Davies_pic1Last summer (2014) I emailed a variety of production companies with my most up to date CV asking if they offered any work experience opportunities. Luckily enough Big Talk Productions got back to me offering work experience for two weeks at their offices in London.  I was so pleased and excited as Big Talk was a company which produced some of my favorite films such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and the World’s End and TV series such as Friday Night Dinner, Him and Her and Spaced, specialising in comedy and drama, which are my favorite genres. Having done some background research on the company, it was motivating to know that Nira Park the founder of the company began as an office runner and had worked her way up through her talent of producing.

The two weeks involved myself taking the role of a office runner working in Big Talk Pictures (Film) office the first week and then Big Talk Productions (TV) office the second week.  Continue reading →

James Jackson, Class of 2014 | Producer Quandary Productions

After graduating from Media Production in 2014 I immediately worked as a Runner for eight months in London at various Reality TV post-production companies. I had aspirations to become an Editor by working my way up the ladder. I did a lot of shadowing with Edit Assistants, Editors and Producers in the very little spare time I had. Imagining looking back in five years and not being proud of the path I took or the work I had created, I decided that I wanted to work on films I could call art and be proud of. The long shifts at awkward times make it difficult to have a social life outside of work and it was even harder to be creative. On a personal level that made me lose a lot of spirit.

Before I graduated I worked as a Production Assistant for Quandary Productions on their feature film Time and Place (2014). This film was released during my time in London. What Quandary did with their inspirations, technique and limited budget was amazing and it got me thinking that I didn’t need to work my way up anywhere to create films I am proud of.
